Malmstrom: “Military cannot be a solution to immigration problems”

malmstromAthens (Dec 3, 2013) “The military can not be a solution to immigration problems” Commissioner of Home Affairs Cecilia Malmstrom said in a presser earlier today in Athens. She was responding to a question based on a report published by Inter Press Service earlier today. The report sited documentation exposing that the European diplomatic corps (EEAS) is proposing various options for operations that will have directly a military character under the Common Security and Defense Policy instrument or they would militarise further an ongoing Frontex operation at southern Mediterranean.

The Commissioner mentioned the commencement of EUROSUR. The project which became operational on Dec 2, predicts a key role for Frontex in creating a border control coordinator. It initially involves 18 member states, and aims to gradually achieve increased intelligence sharing, improved situational awareness, increased surveillance capacity, search and rescue missions, and integration of third countries security and law enforcement systems.
